Round 2

My experience with Tech Talent South has been a very positive one. I’m a graphic designer working in the Charlotte area as an in-house designer (Cardinal Financial) and I do freelance on the side for my own small business (MAD Design Studio). I went to school for mainly print design, and through the needs of my work and my personal interests,  I am learning how to design for the web. Naturally, I wanted to learn web/app design so I can grow as a designer and fulfill the required duties of my job. I tried learning on my own, but with essentially two jobs and the work/life balancing act it was very difficult to keep up and push myself on my own. This is where Tech Talent South comes in.

One day I was online checking out our Plaza Midwood neighborhood website to see what was going on in our ‘hood and I came across exactly what I needed…Tech Talent South! It seemed serendipitous that I came across this organization right when it was creating a location in the Charlotte area. Perfect! This was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Also, I saw TTS had a scholarship opportunity so I applied and I was the lucky recipient, which helped out a lot.

The instructors are extremely helpful and are more than happy to answer any questions and walk us through the solution at our own pace. They are very patient and never seem flustered or “annoyed” at simple or complex questions. They genuinely care and want us to understand the material in order to become successful coders.

I may be a unique case, in that I took advantage of the opportunity to audit classes after my  session ended and went for “Round 2.” Reason being, my dinosaur of a computer (and I mean dinosaur…it was going on 8 years!) had difficulties keeping up with the newest version of Mac OSX and therefore could not upload the newest versions of the needed programs and had hardware issues as well. I knew I was taking a risk with such an old computer but wasn’t quite ready to shell out the money for a new computer yet. However, Louis and Dana, my instructors, were beyond helpful and patient trying to work with me and understanding I wasn’t ready to buy a whole new computer on the spot. Needless to say, my birthday present was a brand new MacBook Air and has served me very well this second time around. I highly recommend Tech Talent South to anyone who wants to learn how to code. The classes are very fast paced and cover a lot of material, but as long as you can push yourself for two months you’ll become successful.
