Becoming a student at TTS was a big change for me after years as a public school English teacher, and I’m loving every minute of it. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of learning and applying our newly acquired knowledge and skills. I actually stayed up until past 3:00a.m. one night working on my homework, because I was too excited about it to go to bed and finish in the morning. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited about writing an inventory program to track how many cupcakes you have?
Sure, sometimes I get stuck–we all do–and I stare at my computer screen wondering why a program isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. Then someone will look at my screen and find a typo, or we’ll compare code to see different approaches to the same problem.
The best part is that this isn’t limited to our classroom. We get to visit local companies and learn from people who are staples in Charlotte’s tech scene. We get to teach a Kids Code class with an amazing group of children who want to learn how to program their own websites and games and create their own businesses.
Today we are half-way through the program. We’ve gone from learning about block variables and instance variables, snake_case and CamelCase, and how to change the default color of our Terminal shells to designing applications to address real-life needs. When we started this class, we were users of technology. Now, we’re creators.
