Lessons Learned

My name is Nouni. I’ve always been interested in web development but thought that I needed to be good in math. I started building a website for my own company about 8 years ago. It wasn’t from scratch but I still needed to know HTML. My first website used HTML and Flash. Since then I’ve always been interested but never thought I would be able to make it a career. Then about a year ago, I revisited web development for a school project and I decided that this was something I wanted to do. At the time, I just started Master’s coursework for Project Management.

In the last six months, I made the decision to take web development courses on Codecademy, Thinkful, and finally, with Tech Talent South. Actually, I used a number of different sites but those were the main platforms.  I had prior HTML and CSS experience but not Ruby on Rails which is what TTS taught us. It took a few weeks to grasp, but I finally understood why Ruby on Rails is used. I never thought I would be a developer but here I am, realizing a dream of being able to build something. I plan to use my new skills to land a job as a software engineer. I love learning and there is lots to learn. One can never learn too much in this field!

My lesson learned was to have patience because everyone learns at different rates and in a different way. Learn it the way you know how. Stay persistent and continue to pound it out because eventually we all get it. Failure is not a result of persistence, but a result of giving up.
